 Communities in Schools-Advisory Council

Below are listed the minutes of the Advisory Council. The Advisory Council reviews and suggests ways to improve the afterschool program and other events headed by our Communities in Schools education partner.

Advisory Board Meeting

September 28, 2007

Meeting Notes:

During this initial meeting, members were announced and thanked for agreeing to serve on the 21st Century After School Program Advisory Board. Updates on how the program is operating were given to board members. Program schedules and current participants were discussed. During this meeting, upcoming projects such as the field trip to the Cypress Hollow Farm Corn Maze on October 12, 2007, were discussed. The addition of such activities as recreation, drama, wellness, and computer centers within the after school program was also discussed.

 Comments/Suggestions by Advisory Board Members:

It was suggested that any GCCS teachers who are interested in assisting with the after school program come in a few days a week to help instruct children in small groups who are identified as deficient in such academic areas as reading and math. Advisory Board Members feel that this would increase teacher support and participation. It was also suggested by Mrs. Dudley that the After School Program purchase the reading curriculum, “Read With Sarah”, in order to improve students’ reading levels. This curriculum is leveled for students who are reading on the pre-primer through middle school level. Both of the suggestions are under review at this time. Board Members will receive updates as they are available.

 Advisory Board Meeting

January 31, 2007

Meeting Notes:During this meeting, Advisory Board Members were given an updated roster of program participants to review. Among the upcoming projects discussed were: Pottery Classes, Fort Discovery Presentations and Gymnastics/Dance Classes. We will also be incorporating CRCT preparation time into our daily schedules. In addition, we plan to begin implementing a Behaviro Management Plan in the coming weeks. Carmen Callaway with the DHR After School Services conducted a workshop on this topic Wednesday, January 30, 2008. She will be monitoring our progress as we implement this plan.

Comments/Suggestions by Advisory Board Members:

  • Mrs. Dudley has offered to conduct sessions on Science Fair Projects for our program participants after March.

  • Advisory Board members suggest that I re-email all teachers at GCCS with a referral form for additional students who would benefit from the After School program who are not currently enrolled.

  • Advisory Board members suggest that we use web resources such as Brain POP and Links to Learning in the After School Program.

  • Advisory Board members suggest that I email teachers about upcoming projects which require computer time in order to have outlines on hand for students.
